Patrick Gaskill will start a Ph.D. here at VCU, under the co-direction of Paul Brooks and I. He just got support—so that’s really great news. He will be investigating the class of graphs where the independence number equals Lovasz’ theta. He will be developing and using novel computer tools—I expect his thesis to have large theoretical and experimental components. Lovasz’ theta is defined as a combinatorial optimization problem—so this should be a lot of fun for Paul and me too.
